What It Takes to Be a Race Car Driver

Have you ever been watching a car race and thought, no, yelled out loud, that you could do a better job at driving that the guy in second place? If you are as enthusiastic about sports car racing as we are then you probably screamed yes! However, do you really know what it takes to be a race car driver?

Be Their Own Mechanic

In addition to driving around the track, drivers need to have an astute awareness of their vehicle’s mechanics. Not just to know how far they can push each component, but to help diagnose any problems that occur on the track. This is crucial to limiting downtime and getting repairs done quickly in the pit stop.

Do you think you could diagnose what was wrong with your car while you were driving it into the pit stop?

It Isn’t Comfortable

Each time that you overtook somebody and felt a rush of adrenaline, did you notice that you didn’t even spill any of your soda that was firmly situated in one of your car’s many cupholders? Race car drivers don’t have the same luxuries that you do when they are attempting to overtake. In fact, there is minimal padding even on the seat. This is all done to keep the weight of the car down, so you can imagine what it feels like inside.

Do you think that you could overtake at 100 miles an hour without power steering, lane guidance, traction control, or anti-collision technology?

It’s Hard!

There’s nothing like driving along for hours on end with the wind rushing through your hair or the air conditioner keeping your vehicle cold. A race car driver doesn’t have any of these options and just has to sit there in a hot vehicle. For this reason, race car drivers need to be remarkably physically fit so that their body can endure the environment inside a race car. That means eating healthy and dedicating a solid portion of your time to exercise and hitting the gym.

Do you think that you could dedicate half of your work time to staying fit at the gym?

Not to Mention Your Mind

Music, drifting thoughts, passengers being quiet as they shop the Groupon Coupons page for Kate Spade, it all works together to make your driving experience pretty enjoyable. Mentally, at least. After all, what is there to worry about if you have satellite radio to take your thoughts away? Now consider the race car driver. Not only does he have to be physically fit, but he needs to keep a sharp brain to focus on every turn and maneuver without any forms of relaxation. In fact, all of the thinking and quick decision making needs to be done with the sound of thundering engines all around.

Is this article going to stop you from yelling at the TV screen each time that you see a driver making a move that you clearly wouldn’t have done? No. And nor should it! IT’s healthy to take out your frustration on the TV! But, did it give you a little more insight into just what a race car driver goes through to get onto your TV? We sure hope so. Now, go and yell at the TV!
